p. 2 INHALT / CONTENTS
p. 3 Platz für Kunst / Place for Art
The sculptures park at the Moltkeplatz in Essen is one of the most interesting and vivid art locations in Northrhine-Westphalia. Just like under a magnifying glass, art works of the 1980s and 1990s can be experienced here comprising a coherent ensemble which has been developed with a clear focus in mind – only a few minutes walking distance from the Essen Hbf central train station. The lawn harbourig the art works is lined with toll plane trees the treetops of which provide an airy roof for the open air display underneath. Represented are the foremost sculptors who have left their defining marks on art in public spaces in the cities of the Ruhrgebiet, and beyond.
Each year the seven permanent sculptures are being complemented by a temporary work within the series „junge Kunst am Moltkeplatz / young Art at the Moltkeplatz“. Responsibility for both the temporary works, and the maintenance of the permanent sculptures rests with the association „Kunst am Moltkeplatz KaM e.V. / Art at the Moltkeplatz KaM e.V.“.
This association is an excellent example of how civic commitment can help to secure and develop art in public spaces. The model serves as a blueprint for similar art sites which are in danger of being abandonded – as was the situation at the Moltkeplatz some ten years ago.
The summer of 2016 marked the tenth birthday of this association: an appropriate occasion to look back and to take stock, and also to newly introduce the sculptures ensemble at the Moltkeplatz and to outline its history. First, Uwe Rüth recalls the way art at the Moltkeplatz came into being. This is followed by a description of the current status of the ensemble, and the activities of the association Kunst am Moltkeplatz KaM e.V..

p. 4 GRUSSWORTE / GREETINGS
Everyone in the Moltkeviertel knows them, but also throughout the city of Essen the sculptures on the Moltkeplatz offer a lot of interesting topics for lively discussions. For more than 10 years now, the association Kunst am Moltkeplatz KaM e. V. has been committed to the preservation and maintenance of the art works. With regular festivals and events, and also with ever fresh ideas, the association provides a noticeable revival in the Moltkeviertel. There is a lot of work associated with it, all of which is carried out by highly committed volunteer members of the association. I would like to express my sincere thanks for this on behalf of the City of Essen, and combine this with the very best wishes for at least another 10 years.
With kind regards
Yours Thomas Kufen
Lord Mayor of the City of Essen
We extend our very warm congratulations to the association Kunst am Moltkeplatz KaM e. V. on its tenth anniversary. It is extremely remarkable what this association has achieved during this time in respect of the preservation and care of the works of art at Moltkeplatz, and introducing them to visitors. With regard to its activities for art in public spaces, this private initiative of Essen´s citizens serves as a role model.
The Museum Folkwang is particularly pleased about the long-standing, good and close relations between the museum and the association. This particularly includes the temporary exhibitions of the series „young Art at the Moltkeplatz“ which are being supported by the museum’s curators.
As a member of the Artistic Advisory Board, I am happy to be able to accompany and support this exemplary initiative for the fine arts in Essen, and I would like to wish the association a long, happy, and fruitful activity.
Dr Tobia Bezzola
Director, Museum Folkwang
For more than 30 years, the art at the Moltkeplatz has stood for high-profile sculpture projects in public space, and has acquired a special place in the Essen cultural scene. This is all the more remarkable, as art in public space can also be a controversial topic. This does not apply to the projects of the association Kunst am Moltkeplatz KaM e. V., which produces and realizes ever new ideas time and again, and which enters into discussions with its neighbours – quite often including Allbau tenants – at openings or guided tours.
That`s why we gladly support projects of the association through the AllbauStiftung – not least because, as the largest housing company in Essen, we feel obliged – beyond our core business of „renting and building“ – to create a city worth living in, and to promote art and culture in the city districts for the local residents through our AllbauStiftung. The artistic work offers, among other things, two outstanding effects for the residents of the district. The creation and exhibition of material objects on the one hand provides an opportunity for active design and change of the district or residential environment. On the other hand, the process provides the possibility of reflection and confrontation with oneself and with the environment.
Since the AllbauStiftung was founded in 1994, we have provided some 80,000 – 90,000 EUR annually through the proceeds of the foundation, and this way support some 30 – 40 cultural projects each year. The fact that Kunst am Moltkeplatz KaM e. V. has benefited several times in the past speaks for the quality of the projects and the ability to always be close to the people – just as we like to be.
We wish Kunst am Moltkeplatz KaM e. V. to continue to have many good ideas in the future.
Best regards
Dirk Miklikowski
AllbauStiftung
